I have always been interested in different iconic images and practices of Métis culture. I’m curious about the question of how to integrate them into the present without reinforcing the tendency to view these icons as an easy answer to defining culture. Culture happens all the time and is constantly redefined. Wake Up! focuses on re-examining a Métis hero, Louis Riel, and the contemporary questions around identity. How do I, as a woman, relate to the stories of men, such as Riel, who are meant to represent us? How can I explore Métis culture succinctly and without reinforcing stereotypes or relying on tropes, while still respecting the importance of Riel’s sacrifices?
